Winter in Eureka means daytime park walks, wildlife viewing nearby, and an evening at Santa’s Magical Kingdom. Add downtown shops or skiing once the slopes open, and you have several things to do in Eureka, MO without driving into central St. Louis.
The timing matters. Some indoor facilities close for winter, outdoor stops depend on daylight, and the former Six Flags St. Louis now operates as Mid America Adventure. This guide covers the holiday season from late November 2026 through early January 2027.
We run Santa’s Magical Kingdom at Jellystone Park, off I-44 exit 261. Our day plan ends with the lights, with time for dinner before you arrive.
Things to Do in Eureka, MO: What’s Open in Winter?
Quick answer: Plan park walks and wildlife visits during daylight, then finish with Santa’s Magical Kingdom after its 5:30 p.m. opening. Route 66 State Park’s grounds stay open year-round, but its visitor center has limited winter access. Check ski operations and theme park dates separately before adding either to your trip.
| Stop | Winter availability | Best use in your plan |
| Santa’s Magical Kingdom | Nightly November 20–January 3, opening at 5:30 p.m. | Holiday lights after dinner |
| Route 66 State Park | Grounds: 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset; visitor center mostly closed November–February | A daytime walk |
| Lone Elk Park, near Valley Park | Wildlife viewing from the park road; pets prohibited, including inside cars | A stop with little walking |
| World Bird Sanctuary, Valley Park | 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving and Christmas | Birds of prey and outdoor aviaries |
| Castlewood State Park, Ballwin | Grounds: 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset | A longer walk instead of Route 66 |
| Hidden Valley, Wildwood | Skiing and tubing depend on seasonal operations | A separate snow outing once open |
| Mid America Adventure | No winter holiday event found in the official listings checked October 12, 2026 | Confirm dates before planning a visit |
| Jellystone Park overnight stays | No winter RV, tent, cabin, or cottage stays | Arrange lodging elsewhere |
Check weather alerts and temporary closures before leaving. The bird sanctuary’s holiday closures do not affect Santa’s Magical Kingdom, which operates on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
A Winter Day Plan, From Wildlife to Holiday Lights
Choose this full-day version if your family enjoys several stops. For a shorter outing, skip the morning and keep the afternoon walk, dinner, and lights.
| Time | Stop | Planning note |
| 10–11 a.m. | Drive through Lone Elk Park | Watch for wildlife from the car; sightings vary |
| 11 a.m.–noon | Visit World Bird Sanctuary nearby | Skip this stop on Thanksgiving or Christmas |
| 12:30–2 p.m. | Lunch and a short downtown Eureka walk | Leave room for travel and a warm break |
| 2–4 p.m. | Walk at Route 66 State Park | Choose a route that gets you back before dark |
| 4:30–5:15 p.m. | Early dinner | Keep the meal near your route to exit 261 |
| From 5:30 p.m. | Santa’s Magical Kingdom | Add store browsing or Santa photos if you want them |
For rough planning, allow 10–15 minutes between exit 261 and Route 66 State Park, around 20–25 minutes to the Valley Park wildlife stops, and 25–30 minutes to Castlewood. These are driving allowances, not live traffic estimates; check your exact entrance and route in your map app.
Keep the park walk flexible. A full two hours outdoors may suit older children, while a brief loop may be enough for toddlers. Leave time to get everyone warm before dinner.

Daytime Parks and Wildlife Near Eureka
Route 66 State Park: Trails Stay Open, the Visitor Center Mostly Closes
Route 66 State Park works for a winter walk even when the visitor center is closed. Missouri State Parks lists ground hours as 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, year-round. Plan to finish your walk before dark rather than use the gate-closing time as your turnaround point.
The visitor center’s winter schedule is different: from November through February, it opens during the second week of December for holiday shopping and closes on other days. Confirm that week’s dates before making a special trip for the exhibits or gift shop.
The center occupies the former Bridgehead Inn, a 1935 roadhouse. The park preserves the Route 66 corridor and the history of Times Beach, where a cleanup followed dioxin contamination in the 1980s. Its level trails offer a shorter alternative to a hillier hike.
Check which entrance you need. The historic bridge is closed to vehicles and pedestrians, so don’t assume you can cross it between the visitor center and the park grounds.
Lone Elk Park and World Bird Sanctuary: Pair the Nearby Stops
Lone Elk Park offers a wildlife drive with opportunities to see elk, bison, deer, and wild turkeys. Admission is free, and you can keep the visit mostly inside the car. Drive slowly, stay clear of animals, and let sightings determine how long you stop.
Domestic animals cannot enter, even inside a vehicle. Check the county park page for access updates before your visit.
The nearby World Bird Sanctuary charges $5 per person and opens daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas. It also prohibits dogs and outside animals on the property, including animals left in vehicles.
Most of this visit is outdoors. Bring layers, and leave the dog at home if either wildlife stop is on your itinerary.
Castlewood State Park: Swap It In for a Longer Walk
Castlewood State Park in Ballwin offers trails along the Meramec River. Use it instead of Route 66 State Park if hiking is the main daytime activity, rather than adding another walk to an already full schedule.
Its official ground hours run from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, year-round. Check trail conditions and choose a route that fits your group’s ability, especially when paths are wet or icy.
Downtown Eureka, Snow Activities, and the Tree Lighting
Downtown Eureka: Lunch and a Warm Break
Downtown Eureka gives you a place to pause between outdoor stops. Have lunch, get a coffee, and take a short walk along South Central Avenue if the weather allows.
Check individual business hours for your visit date, especially on holidays. Choose your dinner stop before leaving home so you don’t spend the last daylight hour looking for an open kitchen.
Eureka’s 2026 Holiday Tree Lighting
The city has scheduled its Holiday Tree Lighting for Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 5–8 p.m. at the Central Avenue Spur, 394 South Central Avenue. The event includes Santa, hot cocoa, crafts, and stage entertainment; the detailed schedule is still pending.
For that evening, replace part of the regular itinerary with the downtown celebration. Santa’s Magical Kingdom remains open later, so you can visit the lights afterward. Check the city page for event updates and parking information.
Hidden Valley: Check Operations Before Adding Skiing or Tubing
Hidden Valley in Wildwood offers skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and night operations during its winter season. An official 2026–27 opening date was not found in the pages checked October 12.
Keep it off a fixed November itinerary until operations are confirmed. Once open, a snow outing can replace the morning wildlife stops. Check the activity you want specifically, since tubing availability and slope operations may differ.
What Changed at Six Flags and Jellystone?
Don’t Assume Holiday in the Park Is Running in St. Louis
The former Six Flags St. Louis now operates as Mid America Adventure. Its official events page lists Fright Fest through November 1, 2026; no winter holiday event appeared in the listings checked October 12.
The Six Flags announcement about Holiday in the Park’s 2026 return concerns Great Adventure and Over Georgia. It does not announce a St. Louis event. Check Mid America Adventure’s calendar before adding it to a December trip.
Jellystone Park Hosts the Lights, but Offers No Winter Overnight Stays
Jellystone Park’s winter information confirms that it offers no RV sites, tent camping, cabins, or cottages during winter. The campground becomes the Santa’s Magical Kingdom display.
Plan your evening visit and lodging separately. Being able to drive through the lights does not mean you can book a cabin on the same property.
A Shorter Day for Toddlers or Grandparents
One daytime stop is enough if naps, cold weather, or walking stamina limit your plans. Choose the Lone Elk wildlife drive for less walking, or a brief Route 66 State Park walk if your group wants to move.
Eat early, then visit the lights in your own vehicle. That keeps most of the evening indoors and lets you skip optional store or photo stops if anyone is tired.
An open-air wagon is another option for families who want to ride together outside the car. Check boarding requirements and the weather before choosing it for someone with limited mobility or cold sensitivity.
End the Evening at Santa’s Magical Kingdom
Our drive-through light show keeps the evening’s main activity inside your car after the daytime walks. Look for the four-story Kingdom Doors, Elfland, and the Tunnel of Dancing Lights, shown on our guide to the Kingdom’s displays.

Pay cash as you exit. An ATM is available inside the General Store. Arrive at least 20–30 minutes before closing, earlier if you want to browse or stop for photos. Check current visit details and vehicle limits before setting out.
Santa Photos, Cocoa, and Ornaments
Professional Santa photos are available nightly November 20–December 23 inside Kringle’s General Store. Santa has a real beard, and finished digital photos go directly to your phone. Personal camera and phone photography is not permitted during the Santa visit.
Kringle’s General Store has gifts, toys, holiday decorations, and handwritten personalized ornaments. Its snack shack serves hot cocoa, fresh chocolate chip cookies, coffee, pretzels, popcorn, and hot dogs. There is no separate store entrance; browsing is part of a Kingdom visit.
Train and Wagon Options
The train and wagon schedule lists shared wagon rides at $18 per person, with date exclusions and departure times to check before booking. Train rides run Monday–Thursday, November 23–December 10, at 5:30 and 6 p.m.
Booking a train or wagon ride for two or more people waives your vehicle admission fee. Children two and under ride free on an adult’s lap. Follow the check-in instructions for your departure, since scheduled rides require an earlier arrival than a regular drive-through visit.
Eureka Winter Trip Questions
Is Holiday in the Park running at the former Six Flags St. Louis in 2026?
A St. Louis event was not announced in the official listings checked October 12, 2026. The park now operates as Mid America Adventure, while Six Flags’ announcement names Great Adventure and Over Georgia. Check the local park’s calendar before planning a holiday visit.
Can you camp or rent a cabin at Jellystone Park in Eureka during winter?
Jellystone Park St. Louis Eureka offers no winter overnight accommodations, including RV sites, tent sites, cabins, and cottages. The property hosts Santa’s Magical Kingdom during the holiday season. Arrange lodging elsewhere if your visit includes an overnight stay.
Is Route 66 State Park open in winter?
The grounds open daily from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, subject to temporary closures. The visitor center mostly closes November–February, opening during the second week of December for holiday shopping. Check its schedule if your visit depends on indoor exhibits.
Is there skiing or snow tubing near Eureka?
Hidden Valley in nearby Wildwood offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing during its operating season. Check current conditions and activity availability before traveling. A projected opening date from a third-party listing is not a confirmed resort opening.
Which Eureka-area stops let you bring the dog?
Friendly pets may ride inside your vehicle at Santa’s Magical Kingdom. Lone Elk Park prohibits domestic animals even inside cars, and World Bird Sanctuary prohibits outside animals on its property. Leave the dog at home for the wildlife itinerary, and check pet rules separately for any trail you choose.
How far is Eureka from downtown St. Louis?
Rome2Rio estimates about 31 road miles and 37 minutes from the Gateway Arch to the former Six Flags park beside exit 261. That is a reference point near Santa’s Magical Kingdom, rather than a measurement to downtown Eureka. Allow more time for traffic and winter weather.
Plan the Day Around Daylight, Dinner, and the Lights
Choose one or two daytime stops, leave room for a warm meal, and save Santa’s Magical Kingdom for the evening. A weeknight outside Christmas week generally brings fewer visitors than a weekend. Bring cash, check the day’s conditions, and confirm any ride reservation before leaving home.
