Light Shows Near Me: How to Prep Your Car for a Drive-Through Night

Before driving through Santa’s Magical Kingdom, bring cash, clear your windows, and check that your vehicle fits. Your car is your seat for the show, so a little preparation helps everyone see more and leaves the driver free to watch the road.

For families choosing things to do for Christmas, our drive-through in Eureka, Missouri, offers animated scenes from the comfort of your own vehicle. Payment happens at the exit, larger vehicles have size limits, and reserved rides have a separate check-in process.

Start with the checklist below, then check our current hours and admission before leaving home.

Light Shows Near Me: Your Car-Prep Checklist

Get these jobs done while you’re still parked at home:

  1. Put admission cash somewhere an adult can reach easily.
  2. Check the vehicle’s height and length, including attached equipment.
  3. Clean the windshield and side windows inside and out.
  4. Find the defrost controls and check your washer fluid.
  5. Fuel up or charge before the outing.
  6. Clear bags from windows and choose seats before buckling up.
  7. Set a passenger’s phone to photograph without flash.
  8. Clear cupholders and put wipes within reach.
  9. Keep finished Santa letters together in a folder.
  10. Check your arrival plan, especially if you’ve booked a ride.

Keep Cash Ready for the Exit Booth

Bring cash for admission, which you pay as you exit the park. Keeping it in a small envelope avoids a search through coats and bags at the booth.

Our carload admission includes tax:

Vehicle Admission
Family vehicle, nights other than Saturday $35
Family vehicle, Saturday $40
Van seating 12 to 15 passengers, limo, transport van, or small bus $60

An ATM is available inside Kringle’s General Store. Bringing cash from home saves you an extra task during the visit.

If you’ve booked a ride, keep the confirmation ready with the passenger count and departure time.

Check Vehicle Size With Racks and Boxes Attached

Measure larger vehicles before setting out: our maximum is 12 feet high and 30 feet long. Include roof boxes, racks, and anything extending beyond the vehicle itself.

Check the actual vehicle you plan to bring, particularly if you’re renting a van.

Large commercial buses cannot pass through the display. Tour-bus organizers should call 636-938-5925 about group options before arranging transport.

Traveling farther? Our guide to drive-through Christmas lights in Missouri covers the wider trip to Eureka.

Clean the Glass Before Darkness Makes Every Smudge Visible

Wipe the inside and outside of the windows your family will use. Fingerprints and a thin film on the glass can soften the view of bright displays.

Pay attention to rear side windows, where children will look out. Clean them in daylight so you can see streaks.

Find your windshield defrost setting before leaving. Use the system as your owner’s manual directs; fresh air and air conditioning can help remove moisture, while prolonged recirculation can encourage fogging.

Check the rear defogger, wipers, and washer fluid, too. Keep a clean microfiber cloth handy for a passenger, rather than asking the driver to wipe glass while moving.

Fuel Up or Charge Before Leaving Home

Start with enough fuel or battery charge for the round trip, cabin heat, and possible waiting. Refueling before departure is easier than adding a stop with tired children later.

An EV uses battery power for cabin heating even when it isn’t moving. The U.S. Department of Energy explains how temperature affects EV range, so leave a reserve beyond your estimated arrival needs.

If your vehicle supports it, preheat the cabin while plugged in before departure. Check charging options along your journey instead of assuming you’ll be able to charge at the show.

For a gasoline vehicle, never run the engine in an enclosed garage while you prepare. Follow your owner’s manual and staff directions for operation on-site.

Check Headlight and Audio Instructions Before Entering

Find your headlight controls and audio settings while parked. Automatic headlights and daytime running lights can behave differently, so check your owner’s manual rather than experimenting in the approach lane.

For our current headlight instructions, whether the route uses radio-synced audio, and any engine-idling guidance, call 636-938-5925 before visiting. These details are not stated on our general information page.

Follow staff directions when you arrive. Let a passenger handle audio adjustments, and restore appropriate road lighting before returning to public roads.

Have the same conversation about sunroofs if that affects your plans. Keep everyone seated and buckled; nobody should stand through an opening for a better view or photograph.

Check Hours Before Setting Your Departure Time

For the 2026 holiday season, our lights operate every night from November 20, 2026, through January 3, 2027, including holidays.

Dates Evening Hours
November 20 through December 24 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.
December 25 through January 3 5:30 to 10 p.m.

We recommend arriving at least 20 to 30 minutes before closing, with additional time for browsing Kringle’s. This recommendation does not establish a last-entry cutoff.

Saturday nights in December before Christmas are historically our busiest. Set navigation before driving; the entrance is on Fox Creek Road near I-44 Exit 261 in Eureka.

Set Up Seats for Comfort and a Clear View

Choose seats before you buckle everyone in. Keep children in their appropriate car seats or boosters, and leave everyone seated and buckled throughout the drive.

Move shopping bags and spare coats away from the windows. If a child cannot see well, adjust what blocks the view before departure instead of planning to swap seats along the route.

For warmth, place a blanket over a properly fastened harness. NHTSA’s winter driving guidance advises using thin layers under a child’s harness rather than bulky winter coats.

Look for the Kingdom Doors, Toy Land, and the Tunnel of Dancing Lights together. Preview our Kingdom scenes so children can recognize favorites from their seats.

Give a Passenger the Camera

Let a passenger handle photos and video while the driver follows the route. Set up the phone before entering so nobody needs help finding a camera setting in the dark.

To reduce reflections through closed glass:

  • Turn off the camera flash.
  • Keep the dome light off when it isn’t needed.
  • Dim nearby phone and tablet screens.
  • Hold the lens close to a clean part of the window.

Take a test photo and adjust the angle if reflections dominate.

The professional Santa visit has different rules: outside cameras and phone photography are not permitted. Our Santa photo details cover the experience inside Kringle’s, available November 20 through December 23, with digital photos delivered by text.

Clear Cupholders Before Buying Cocoa

Make room for drinks before anyone hands you a full cup. Put wipes and napkins in a door pocket and keep a small trash bag within a passenger’s reach.

Our Snack Shack at Kringle’s serves cocoa and Mrs. Claus’ chocolate chip cookies, baked fresh each evening. Let hot drinks cool and secure lids before returning to the car.

Keep snacks where an adult passenger can manage them without reaching across the driver. Put bags securely away from feet and drinks for the journey home.

For the broader family-night plan, see our Christmas lights tour ideas.

Keep Santa Letters Together and Within Reach

Finish letters at home and place them in a folder so they don’t disappear beneath coats or snack bags. Keep the folder with an adult passenger until you reach the North Pole Mailbox.

Children can bring letters to drop off as you pass the North Pole scene. Follow staff guidance and have an adult manage the handoff without unbuckling children or asking them to lean out.

Know Where to Check In for a Reserved Ride

Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled train or wagon departure. For a 5:30 p.m. ride, arrive at 5:15 p.m. instead.

The arrival process is:

  1. Enter as though you’re driving through the show.
  2. After the first tunnel, tell the team member at the Gingerbread House that you have a reservation.
  3. Follow their directions to the parking lot.
  4. Check in at the desk inside Kringle’s General Store.

We provide blankets, and you may bring your own. Rides cannot wait for late passengers, so keep the booking details accessible before joining the approach.

The Old Fashioned Holiday Wagon and Santa Express Train cost $18 per person. Their schedules differ, and some dates exclude rides, so check ride availability and reserve your departure before planning around one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does car preparation for a light show include?

Car preparation covers visibility, fuel or charge, restraints, payment, and vehicle fit. Complete these tasks before departure rather than during the drive.

Do I need special camera equipment?

A passenger’s phone can handle casual photos through a clean window. Reducing reflections matters more than extra equipment for a family outing.

What should I check in a borrowed car?

Locate the borrowed car’s defrost, headlight, and audio controls before driving. Check its dimensions and child-seat setup rather than assuming they’re familiar.

When should I clean windows and test controls?

Clean the glass in daylight so streaks are visible. Test controls while parked, leaving time to resolve visibility problems before setting out.

Who should handle directions, photos, and children’s items?

An adult passenger should manage those tasks when available. The driver should set navigation before departure and leave phone adjustments until safely parked.

What ride booking details should I keep accessible?

Keep your ride confirmation and departure time accessible. Share arrival instructions with your group so everyone allows time for parking and check-in.

Does an EV stop using battery power while waiting?

An EV can use battery power for cabin heating while stationary. Plan for the return trip and waiting rather than driving distance alone.

Can I use another show’s headlight or radio instructions?

Another venue’s instructions do not establish SMK’s rules. Confirm SMK’s guidance rather than switching lights or using a frequency found elsewhere.

Is cleaning the windshield the same as defogging it?

Cleaning removes dirt and smears; defogging clears condensation. A clean windshield can still fog, so check both the glass and climate controls.

Does the larger-vehicle admission rate guarantee my van fits?

The admission category does not replace the vehicle-size limit. Measure your van with accessories attached before relying on a listed larger-vehicle price.

Does a booked ride require separate vehicle admission?

SMK waives vehicle admission when you book a wagon or train ride for two or more people. Keep the confirmation available on arrival.

What should I confirm with SMK before leaving?

Check hours and admission, then call 636-938-5925 about unresolved headlight, audio, idling, or sunroof questions. Confirm ride availability separately if you want a reservation.
