Experience Gifts for Kids: Give a Night at the Kingdom

Experience gifts for kids give them something to do, such as an outing, a class, or time together, with fewer things to store afterward. For St. Louis-area families, a night at Santa’s Magical Kingdom in Eureka, Missouri, turns that idea into a Christmas present you can plan and put in an envelope.

Start with the lights, choose a train or wagon ride if it fits your family, and tuck a homemade invitation beside a personalized Santa letter. During the visit, your child can choose an ornament from Kringle’s General Store to bring home.

Quick answer: Give a Kingdom visit before Christmas if you want Santa or the train to be part of it. Santa visits end Dec. 23, and the train finishes Dec. 10; a Christmas-morning reveal can still lead to lights and scheduled wagon rides through Jan. 3.

What a Night at Santa’s Magical Kingdom Includes

We run Santa’s Magical Kingdom at Jellystone Park St. Louis Eureka, off I-44 at Exit 261. For the 2026 holiday season, the lights run every night from Nov. 20 through Jan. 3, 2027, starting at 5:30 pm.

Your family stays in your own car for the drive past four-story Kingdom Doors, a 300-foot waterfall of light, and the Tunnel of Dancing Lights. Show your child the Kingdom’s light displays when you reveal the gift.

Kringle’s General Store gives you somewhere to stop for cocoa, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and ornament shopping. Santa meets families there nightly through Dec. 23. The Santa photo details explain digital photo delivery and the rule against outside cameras or phone photography during the visit.

Drive admission costs $35 per family vehicle Sunday through Friday and $40 on Saturdays, including tax. You pay in cash at the exit booth. Rides, refreshments, ornaments, and professional photos are separate purchases, with a vehicle admission waiver for qualifying ride bookings.

Plan a Night at the Kingdom as Their Gift

When You Give It Decides What the Night Includes

The reveal date matters because some parts of the Kingdom finish before Christmas Day. Choose the visit first, then decide when to give the gift.

The Santa Express Train runs Monday through Thursday, Nov. 23 to Dec. 10. Santa visits continue through Dec. 23, while the light show continues through Jan. 3, 2027.

When you reveal the gift What you can plan What to check before promising it
Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26 to 29 A visit later that weekend or in December For the train, choose a remaining Monday through Thursday date on or before Dec. 10.
Early December, including St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6 Lights, Santa, and a train or wagon ride on an eligible date A Dec. 6 reveal leaves Dec. 7 to 10 as the remaining train dates.
Mid-December, Dec. 11 to 20 Lights, Santa through Dec. 23, and a wagon ride on an eligible night The train has finished. Public and private wagons have different blackout dates.
Christmas morning A visit from Dec. 25 through Jan. 3 Santa and the train have finished. Wagons are scheduled nightly; check booking availability.

An early-December weeknight lets you combine the train with a Santa visit. It also avoids December Saturdays, which our visit information identifies as the busiest nights before Christmas.

A Christmas-morning reveal gives your family an outing during the school break. From Dec. 25 through Jan. 3, the Kingdom opens nightly from 5:30 to 10 pm.

How to Reveal Experience Gifts for Kids at Every Age

Make the reveal show what the child will actually do. A picture of the light tunnel, a named outing, or a date on the family calendar gives the envelope something concrete to explain.

Keep a toddler’s outing close at hand. An older child may enjoy following clues or helping choose part of the evening.

Toddlers and Two-Year-Olds

For experience gifts for toddlers, keep the reveal close to the outing and pair it with something familiar. Tuck the invitation beside mittens or a favorite blanket, then show a picture of the lights before you leave.

The drive lets your toddler stay in their own car seat. If you add a train or wagon ride, children two and under ride free on an adult’s lap under the published ride policy.

The Santa Express Train’s 5:30 and 6:00 pm departures may fit an earlier evening. Allow for travel and check-in when planning around bedtime.

Ages 4 to 7

Make a homemade ticket on cardstock, put it in a stocking, or attach it to a countdown chain. Include the place and a date you have already confirmed.

After booking the corresponding train departure, your invitation could read:

Family Night at Santa’s Magical Kingdom
Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2026
Santa Express Train: 5:30 pm

The homemade ticket is for the reveal. Keep the actual booking confirmation for check-in, and follow its arrival instructions.

A personalized letter beside the ticket adds a message about your child. The invitation carries the outing details, so the letter doesn’t need to promise a particular ride or date.

Ages 8 to 12

Hide clues that lead to the invitation, then let older children choose the car playlist or an ornament style at Kringle’s.

If you want them to choose between the train and a wagon, make that decision together before booking. For an already-booked ride, offer choices that fit the reservation.

A private wagon is another option for families who want their own group aboard. It seats up to 12 and costs $75 for the first two riders, plus $18 for each additional rider; check the train and wagon options before selecting a date.

Pair the Invitation With a Personalized Santa Letter

A personalized letter designed to feel like it’s from Santa gives the outing a Christmas introduction. Our Letters from Santa creator asks for your child’s name, interests, wishes, and a proud moment from their year.

Choose an accomplishment your child will recognize, such as learning to read a favorite book. Select a classic and warm, playful and funny, or heartfelt tone.

With email delivery, print the letter at home and add your invitation once it arrives. Keep the date, time, and booked activity on your invitation. Arrange the letter and visit separately; pairing them is your gift presentation.

If you want a keepsake presentation, review the Premium Gold Seal Santa Claus Letter and confirm your selected package in the order flow. If Santa will bring a separate present, our guide to gift-from-Santa ideas covers how families assign the gifts.

A parent or guardian completes the form. Our letter page states that we never sell or share your child’s information and that you can delete it after the season ends.

Add a Kringle’s Ornament to Remember the Visit

A personalized ornament gives your child something to bring home from the night. Kringle’s General Store offers hand-lettered ornaments for $18.95 each, with hundreds of styles, including family ornaments.

Let your child choose a design they like. An elf adds the personalization during your visit.

Store the ornament with the invitation or letter after Christmas. Those pieces give you a record of the night.

If you’re also choosing a present for someone who can’t make the trip, see our Christmas keepsake gifts for kids for options they can enjoy at home.

Book the Night Before You Reveal a Ride

Check the family calendar before paying for a dated ride. Train and wagon bookings are non-refundable and allow no cancellations unless the Kingdom cancels for snow, ice, or other unforeseen circumstances. Rides run rain or shine.

For a booked experience, use this order:

  1. Agree on the date. Check school events, travel, bedtime, and who will bring the children.
  2. Choose and book the ride. Review the relevant blackout dates and available departures on the ride booking page.
  3. Prepare the reveal. Copy the confirmed details onto your invitation and keep the booking confirmation for the accompanying adult.
  4. Allow time to check in. Arrive 30 minutes before the ride, except for 5:30 pm departures, which require a 5:15 pm arrival.

Blankets are available at check-in inside Kringle’s. Rides leave on schedule, so put the arrival time on the adult’s plan.

If your schedule isn’t firm, give the drive as an outing and choose the night later. Current admission information lists cash payment at the exit booth; consider a ride once everyone agrees on a date.

Four paid public wagon seats total $72 at the listed $18-per-person rate. Booking a train or wagon ride for two or more people waives the vehicle admission fee. Budget separately for any letter, refreshments, ornament, or professional photo you add.

Other Experience Gift Ideas to Pair With the Night

Good experience gifts for kids fit something the child already enjoys. Pair the outing with an activity for later in the year.

  • For a budding cook: a beginner cooking class or a planned baking afternoon together.
  • For a child who loves animals: a zoo visit or membership suited to how often the family can go.
  • For an active child: swim lessons or a session of an activity they’ve asked to try.
  • For time with a grandparent: breakfast together followed by a child-chosen outing.

Check the parents’ schedule before giving an ongoing class or membership. If you also want a physical present, our Christmas gifts for kids by age guide covers that part of the gift.

Make the Kingdom Visit a Repeatable Christmas Tradition

Fit an annual outing to your calendar and budget. Keep the parts you enjoyed and decide which extras to include each year.

In research published in the Journal of Consumer Research, Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner found that experiential gifts strengthened recipients’ relationships with givers more than material gifts did. That finding doesn’t establish how a particular child will respond or remember a visit.

Save the invitation, letter, and any purchased Santa photos together. For broader advice on keeping a ritual manageable as children grow, see our family Christmas tradition ideas.

Questions Families Ask Before Giving a Night Out

What makes a good experience gift for a toddler?

A manageable outing with a familiar adult is a useful starting point. For a drive-through light show, reveal it close to the visit and pair the invitation with mittens or a favorite blanket; your toddler can enjoy the lights from their own car seat.

Which night works for a gift opened on Christmas morning?

You can plan a Kingdom visit from Dec. 25, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, including Christmas night, with hours of 5:30 to 10 pm. Public wagons are scheduled nightly during that period, subject to booking availability, but Santa visits and the Santa Express Train have finished.

Can grandparents who live out of town give a night at the Kingdom?

Grandparents can agree on a date with the parents, book a train or wagon ride online, and send them the confirmation. A ride booking for two or more people waives vehicle admission, and a personalized letter can accompany the invitation even if the grandparents can’t attend.

How much does a night at Santa’s Magical Kingdom cost for a family of four?

The drive costs $35 per family vehicle Sunday through Friday or $40 on Saturdays, including tax. Four paid public wagon seats cost $72 and qualify for the vehicle admission waiver; children two and under ride free on an adult’s lap. Letters, refreshments, ornaments, and professional photos cost extra.

Should a non-toy gift come with something to open?

A related item can help a younger child understand the gift. Wrap the invitation with mittens or a cocoa cup, or put it beside the Santa letter while you explain the outing.

Give Experience Gifts for Kids With a Date to Look Forward To

Choose the night around what your family wants to do. If Santa and the train are part of the gift, book an available Monday through Thursday departure on or before Dec. 10 and reveal it beforehand.

For a Christmas-morning surprise, choose a visit from Dec. 25 through Jan. 3. Put the outing details on your invitation, pair it with the letter if you wish, and keep the booking confirmation ready for the visit.
